I have a two year old dell laptop. Recently it has started running very slowly. It takes forever to load any programs or anything. I have no spyware problems - I use Ad-Aware regularly and keep my definitions updated. I have norton installed, and that is the only virus program I use. I dont have it networked, only use the internet casually at home, and dont have any big programs running. I really just use the computer for the internet and for microsoft word. And I dont download a lot of stuff that would have given me a virus, only a little bit of music on limewire.

If you have any suggestions that would be awesome, but please be specific as to any solutions because I am not very computer saavy. However, i really want to avoid resetting my entire hard drive because I would lose some things that i cant easily replace on your drive.

Thanks!

Well first think I would run a virus scan to see if your computer is free of virus. Then go to start and accessories then find system tools. There you will find Disk Defrag. do that and then do Disk cleanup. All temp files can be deleated. you can then go to start and run, put in %temp% hit run, then when that page opens you can delete all these files, they are all temp files, you no longer need these. You will need to reboot after. Hope this helps.

hello, this use to happen to my computer too. now i've somhow fixed it. i think you "do" have virus in your comp, because limewire isnt a good program, i thought it was a p2p software. so delete that just to make sure, and save your music to somewhere else. if that dont work do this follow these instructions carefully!

1st find those cds that come with your laptop, the system restore CD.

2nd go buy some empty cds if you dont have enough, burn all your music to the CDs and copy your files such as your storys or works etc to the cd too. if you have games you can copy them too. but its a waste of time so do all that, make sure you get the right CD for copying files.

3rd ok now put in your system restore cd, and click on install windows, if it ask you something like this "do you want to install a fresh copy of windows?" click yes. my desktop does that and the is should restart. after it restart, you read and follow the instruction it gives you. and make sure you overwrite the old windows!

and now it shoud work great! fast speed etc!

Do not believe ANY anti virus program to be 100% safe.
You have 2 years worth of garbage on your hard drive.
Get a good registry cleaner, and get window washer, to clear your temp files etc.
Delete all the programs you do not use anymore.
Then do a de fragmentation of the hard drive

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

If not, log in on secure mode with networking (F8 on boot) and bypass to google and seek for the note "housecall", the first website listed will be a trendmicro website which will run an finished experiment, registry, virus, undercover agent ware and all. this can ought to do it. beforehand logging off, AVG has a clean undercover agent ware scanner that's loose to receive.

Maybe you have too much startup items to be loaded. Keep it empty if possible. Go to Start > Run > MSCONFIG > Startup Tab. Uncheck everything except Firewall, AV.

Do Defragmentation to your HDD as often as possible. Minimum once a week.

Clear your desktop. It is said that the computer needs to load your desktop when it is booting up. So by having it empty, it will boot up faster.

Clean your registry as said by other users.

If it is still sluggish, maybe u need to ask for help at some tech forums. Post up a HijackThis! log to them. They will be gladly to help.

norton really slows down your computer, i mean its good and everything, but if it goes wrong it can be really tricky.
AVG is a good alternative or Zone Alarm, and they are cheaper, they even have free versions
But something else you can try which is really quick is getting a program called 'tweaknow regcleaner' i got it from download.com and i run it it cleared over a 1000 registry bits i didnt need really quickly and that helped me.

Good luck!
