I believe we are. There are many similarities between monkeys and humans physically and behaviorally.

Our species, as with all other species of plants, bacteria, animals and fungi (yeah, I can't even remember all the kingdoms), is basically a collection of cells that produce proteins.

The earliest life forms developed about 5 billion years ago, but they died. Then some more life forms developed, and their great distinction was that they had the power to replicate themselves.

When all the life on Earth was in a couple of small pools of proteins and nucleic acids, it was all about the same. But life forms are competitive, and struggle to eat each other or not be eaten, to mate and produce high-survival offspring, and to gather status to facilitate the previous goals.

From the first few pools, everything began to evolve. Humans have a 99.8% similarity with chimpanzees, our closest living relatives. We have a 90% genetic similarity to domestic dogs (because of a mutual ancestor, not because of anything disgusting). We have a 50% genetic similarity to house flies. We have a 40% genetic similarity to BANANAS.

Ultimately, the reason every life form you can think of has adapted to its environment in its own particular way is because our genes use us to survive. These replicating life forms, that once floated freely in little pools (and in the oceans) now use our bodies as their oceans.

These life forms are our DNA, the basic building blocks of life.

I learned this from reading a book called "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins.

As for God, there was probably some kind of higher intelligence at work to set up a such a system. But wouldn't a benevolent God allow its children to develop at their own pace? Perhaps that ancient seed of life, carried within us all, is the seed of God itself? Perhaps, in some distant eon beyond our comprehension, we will evolve to the point where we can, without pride or puffery, refer to ourselves as gods.

As far a being from monkeys, they were a part of ancestral lineage. As were rats. As were iguanas. As were fish...

Not from monkeys and gorillas, but from a common ancestor.

*believe* what you want, but whatever happened did happen, and believing in it or not won't change it, regardless of what we can prove.

No. And it hasn't been PROVED that we are; Darwin himself said his theory was impossible.
