I'm constantly seeing severe deficiencies in the grammar, punctuation and spelling of many questions on here. Not that I'm perfect, but a lot of this is so far over-the-top it's disturbing. What's up with this? I have the following thoughts but I'm wondering about yours.

1. Users are using Instant Message lingo and abbreviations.
2. Hooked-on-phonics ruined this country.
3. People have become so dumbed down they can't even perform basic sentance construction.

I am deeply disturbed also. The sad part is that this comes with a spell checker. Yes we are raising generations of illiterates. I'm sure this gives people in other countries who read these a really bad impression of Americans. How sad.

Hooked-on-phonics actually teaches kids how to read by sounding out the words. I'm thinking a lot of these misspellings come from the instant message users.

I think that people are lazy and abbreviate words for speed, which is also a curse of computers and internet as well-we all want speed and brevity. I also think that many people who post here are very young and/or come from countries where English is a second language (like India, for example--where my wife happens to come from, by the way) and there is difficulty in self-expression. But I don't allow it to disturb me most of the time. Of course, sometimes I have to correct the spelling or make misspellings on purpose just to join the fun. no lite te bastardes incomborunderum.

We all commit grammar errors but sometimes they are too numerous. Remember that many kids use this site. That is why we have to be more careful with our grammar and that which we express here are good examples. Check spelling should be used before submitting anything Even it may not give the correct word spelling that you are looking for.

Other than that I wonder/hope that kids these days are being taught English at all, it doesn't bother me. I'm more worried about what's happening to the world (based on a lot of stuff I see in Yahoo answers: spam, racism, insulting questions and answers, "my country is number one no matter what Human rights it violates". Incidentally, it's "sentence" not "sentance".

Like you they don't bother to use their spell check, for instance sentence is spelled s,e,n,t,e,n,c,e, not s,e,n,t,a,n,c,e. Before you criticize those on this forum check rself. it is easy to point a finger and not realize there r 3 other fingers and a thumb pointing back at u. People r lazy point and simple we all take shortcuts. Help the ppl on this forum with ur knowledge instead of ur criticism, it'll go a lot further.

It does not bug me at all. It kinda makes it easier and faster to type. Some of the answer and the questions make me fall to the floor laughing because they have horrid grammar, punctuation, and all that.

We are not here for language or english classes. Most of us are here to get some questions answered. Why don't you concentrate on something more disturbing than grammatical errors. What about all the racism, hate, bigotry, and stupidity?

ALOT OF THE ANSWERS ARE PROVIDED BY THE YOUNGER SIDE AND THEY;RE DOING THE BEST THEY CAN. SECONDLY, SOME ARE DEALING WITH TIME LIMITS/COMPUTER TIME AND THEY DO THE BEST THEY CAN AND LASTLY, I'LL DO THE BEST I CAN WITH WHAT I CAN INTERPRET AND QUITE FRANKLY I LIKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET CREATIVE WITH THOSE QUESTIONS WHEN YOU HAVE TO GUESS WHAT'S ASKED.

Defend the poor and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy; Free them from the hand of the wicked.

Psalm 82:3-4

'sentance' is spelt with 'sentence'. Did you know that or was it a test?

I agree that there's a problem with English skills, but citing yahoo answers as an example isn't very representative in my own humble opinion.
