At the bottom of the toilet tank is a rubber (usually) ball/flapper that seals the tank off from the bowl.

If it's still running, one cause might be that your chain (or whatever holds it to the float) is getting caught. You'll have to reach in and free it.

The other cause is that the flapper has shifted over time. Reach down and move it so it sits properly.

At worst, you might have to replace the assembly if it's really old, but try those things first.

And don't worry about reaching in. The water in the tank is clean. It comes in from your pipes and sits there waiting to flush out the bowl. It might be a bit rusty, but there's no poop there.

Because either your flapper valve isn't sealing, your tank level (set by the float) is too high, or a seal between the tank and bowl has gone bad. If you provided more information we could pinpoint the problem.
Take the lid off your tank and look into it. Where is the water level, is it all the way up to the overflow tube? If it is, gently bend the arm of the float down a little to get the level to drop. Do this in small moves, then check by flushing the toilet to see how much you changed it.
If the water level is below the overflow, check the seal around the flapper valve. Make sure the chain isn't getting under the flapper. Look for the flapper to be warped, especially if you use drop in chemicals in your tank. If this has to be replaced, they are both cheap and easy to install.

If you mean without stopping- you have a malfunctioning valve , either tank float level or flush ball.

If you mean for awhile after the flush is complete, it's restoring the water level that makes a gas seal between the bowl and the sewer line.

The cope with for the close off is commonly held onto the valve stem (the section you % to coach clockwise to close) by ability of a single phillips head screw. attempt tightening the screw to extra suitable seat the cope with over the shaft. it may artwork. whilst it does not, get rid of the screw so which you would be able to pull off the cope with and turn the stem with pliers. this could very very nearly actual destroy the stem. you will would desire to close down the proper part of the homestead and replace the valve sometime! a different mindset could be to "fool" the lavatory into thinking this is finished by ability of securing the flow interior the great up place.

your water level in the tank is too high and running down the overflow pipe. adjust the water level so that the water level is about3/4 inches below the overflow pipe.
