Her entire life in the village in which she lived was about her standing up to oppression. She did what she believed in and was ridiculed and ostrasized for it.

First of all, this is an EXCELLENT BOOK -- well ahead of its time for dealing with the problems of oppression of women in general in society.

READ the book yourself -- but think of this -- WHY did Hester choose the path that she did?
