No, it interferes with navigational equipment. Most aircraft now provide pay phones at every other seat if you need to make calls while in the air.

You can make calls while the door is open when the plane is on the ground.

Hey, I work for a major airline, and I used to be a flight attendant. The answer is yes. While you are sitting on the plane, waiting to push back from the gate, you can still talk on your phone. As soon as the flight attendant closes the cabin door, then you must turn it off. After you have taken off, and reached an altitude of 10,000 feet, they will make an announcement saying that you can use all approved portable electronics. Most airlines have a seat back magazine that tells what electronics are approved. Cell phones are approved if you are in "airplane mode." That means your phone won't send or try to receive a signal. It's perfectly fine to use it, however, just to listen to some Mp3's. Just be wary of when you are in final descent as you will have to stowe all electronics for landing. The second the plane touches the runway, you are allowed once again to use your cell phones to make a call. Have a safe flight.

It really depends, on your distance from the ground, and the competency of your network!

Modern Digital Cell sites have a range of about 0-10 miles. It is directional, meaning the output power is focused over an area which usually depends on the topography of the land! That's not to say that it will not reach an airplane, it may, however it is generally unacceptable because airlines frown upon any devices which may theoretically affect operation of the aircraft!

Cell sites "handoff" the call between each other. If the sites do so incorrectly, you will loose the call. Traveling at 400 miles per hour may be just little too fast for the switch (main computer) to control the handoff!

Better just pay the fee and use the phone on the plane, it will be more reliable, and you don't risk getting in trouble!

No, only before it takes off from the gate, or after it arrives at the gate. Some planes are equipped with phones that you can call during a flight, using a credit card. Cost is very high. The captain will get on the intercom before they leave and tell everyone to turn off their cell phones and electronic equipment. Supposedly it could interfere with the instrument readings. Better be safe than sorry.

Yep. They have phones you can use on the plane...but they are expensive.

Otherwise, the flight attendants will let you know when you are required to turn off your phone. You can use it while boarding and debarking, but not while taking off, flying, or landing.

Have a nice day!

You are not supposed to because it can mess with the communication systems of the plane, but in an emergency your cell phone might work.

if you turn the wireless mode off ( some phones especially the PDA devices) you can swtich it off and keep your phone on.. you wont be able to text or make calls, but play games or listen to music...i have already (by mistake) had my cell phone on during a flight and nothing happened, but i heard it messes with the frequencies.

nope it interferes with their equiptment but some planes have those phones where you can call once the attendents tell you they are on the side of the seat but not on all planes

yes you can physically use them on a plane but they don't want you to because it may interupt the planes instruments and cause a crash so don't do it unless you want to crash
