I bleed with you, Santa's Elf. In any event, you certainly seem to have struck a nerve!
To mr_mumbles_nyc and Janice Marie:
1) The apostrophe and 's' CAN be used to form the plural of abbreviations, even when they're not followed by periods. It's an optional thing. Look it up!
2) As the first part of his question, Santa's Elf wrote a statement, so he was correct in ending it with a period. Yahoo! Answers adds the question mark automatically if the asker doesn't use one.
3) Nothing grammatically wrong here. What's your problem?
4) Well, ok, this one I'm tempted to give you. But a case could be made for the singular, since a compound subject referring to two or more things as a unit is followed by a singular verb. In this instance, "spelling and grammar" could be considered to form a unit.

First, let me state, that the following is just my opinion. So let me begin with: That's nice but we have a check spelling feature on the answer part of Q/A and what we are objecting to is the fact that so few people take the time or the inclination to use it. And as far as your pitiful story about how life has dealt you a rotten hand, let me assure you, you are not in that Lifeboat alone. Some of us have had a hard time in life the same as you & some even worse. But I think that using such a "poor me" attitude out here may get you, a lot of sacastic remarks. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but you are not the "only" person out here, who has had to learn things the hard way. My Mother always said, Tex does not play well with others and that is probably true. And my biggest pet peeve is folks who say they are not looking for sympathy, but in case you were...You can find it in the Dictionary between "$-h-i-t" and Syphillis. I have been a one handed typist for more years than I can to remember, but I have learned that the more you type the faster you get and there is still that wonderful little feature on here called"Check Spelling" and it is there for a purpose. I am going to expect more thumbs-down on this answer than you can shake a stick at & it will probably get deleted, but this is only my opinion and like most people's opinions, you should just consider the source and or take it with a grain of salt. You have now had my 2 cents worth.

This question comes up so much. Personally, I don't see why it's important but I think the reasons are 1) people write fast and on a keyboard . They would probably make fewer mistakes if they were writing by hand. 2) Certainly in the UK (where I'm from), standards are declining and basic skills like punctuation aren't taught. You can't expect people to spell and punctuate if they've never been taught. 3) Yahoo answers is a leisure activity used largely by young people. They would probably put more effort into schoolwork (well, hopefully).

People in society have become so lazy that it is now acceptable to type as if you had the education of a 5 year old. Things like iz and waz and didja are now acceptable in every day life. I am an english teaching aide for a group of 6th graders and the some of the papers that are handed in are written as if they were talking to a friend on AOL instant messenger. It is ridiculous and the grammar and writing have lost their significance and many people allow this to happen.
P.S. I want to know why I got 2 thumbs down for this, I think this is a reasonable answer!!!

I wondered the same question myself. Spell check may even be contributing to the problem. People are not learning to spell correctly if the computer automatically corrects it for them. Also, some things you just have to know, like when to use affect or effect....lay or lie...etc. Spell check can't help with those kind of grammatical errors.

Welcome to the internet, friend. The thing (that Al Gore sill thinks he invented) that proves the following:
* Most people have no clue about spelling.
* The idea about a million monkeys banging away on a million keyboards eventually coming up with the works of Shakespeare is absolutely false.
And about people not knowing how to write any more: Most people never did. It's just made glaringly obvious by the ease of use of the internet.

Well, I only saw one in your question, and it was probably just a 'typo'....I must agree with you, however! It is so annoying and I honestly wonder what the kids are learning in school these days?! I have answered a few questions with a bit of a sarcastic tone, asking for coherent information, and have had the answers removed for insulting other members! It's a sad reality, English is becoming a lost art! Good question!
By the way, I never re-read anything, and I've never in my life used spell check....hmmmmmmm......
And, Dr. Sponge, as an English teaching aide, I would certainly hope you realize that English is not begun in lowercase....

It is because people think it is "uncool". It is cool; grammar is one of the most important things in life. We could not live without language. All ye who read this, know, think, learn, and realize that every misspelling, every mistake, every improper notion, is being watched by millions. Our arts of writing must be pure, clear, white, and understandable. Life needs lively words, I always say. Lively means fresh, clear, and clean, as in referring to language. Use the Spelling Check, p[lease; mistakes could cost you.

What is so hard to understand that people make typos when they are answering questions. Usually they are typing fast to get their thoughts down as quickly as they can think them and they hit send and it's gone - like so many emails that don't ever get the attachment they mention they are including. People are trying to do many things quickly, often at the same time. Cut them a break.
Peace!
PS - By the way, I have tried several times to use this check spelling myself and it always seems to hang or have some problem with it. I try it less and less as it disappoints more and more.

I could go into a whole soliloquy about the faults in our education system, but I won't. People just don't care anymore. To me it really is disrespectful to not even try to spell correctly.
