It is the English translation of the words that make up the NAZI party. In German the letters are NSDAP. I don't remember what the German words are.
The NAZI party certainly was socialist. They definitely had a planned economy. I don't know where people get the idea that Hitler and the NAZIs weren't socialists. The primary differences between them and the Communists were, they used race as the divisive factor, the Communist use class (as in Class Struggle).
Communism is supposed to be an international movement and the NAZIs were based on the idea of Greater Germany, but they both had the same idea: a one-world system run by them. We still have people like that today.

Translation for NAZI
The term "Nazi" is a short form of Nationalsozialist, representing the German pronunciation of the first two syllables of the word "national."
The National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (or NSDAP), generally known in English as the Nazi Party, was a political party in Germany between 1920 and 1945. The party's leader, Adolf Hitler, was appointed chancellor of Germany by president Hindenburg in 1933
Despite the use of the term "socialist" in the Nazi Party's official name, it is not generally considered a socialist party in the common understanding of the term, in the sense that Nazism rejected the policies of internationalism, egalitarianism, and common ownership of the means of production.
