What is your favorite progressive rock song and/or artist?

If you want to elaborate on why, please.

Also if you want to name a few honorable mentions or new great or unknowns, also please elaborate.

Wow, I'm kinda surprised that nobody has mentioned Rush. Nearly all progressive rock bands reference them as being the inspiration.

Pink Floyd and Yes are both classic as well...

More modern progressive rock bands with honorable mention...

Gordian Knot (instrumental)
Porcupine Tree

There are tons of good prog rock bands out there. I've been playing progressive rock (bass guitar) for awhile and hope to release a couple albums in the next few months (almost done!! Hooray!)

I agree with Melissa. Not many can top Pink Floyd, plus it's one heck of a great concert! Other greats include The Moody Blues, Alan Parsons Project, Peter Paul and Mary, Seals & Crofts and the list goes on and on. Lately I've enjoyed the tunes of Gnarles Barkley. His 'Crazy' is a very intriguing video.

It needs to be a combination of meaningful lyrics with depth in addition to unusual tunes to grab my attention.

Pink Floyd, the inventors of progressive rock. No one else sounded like them in their time and their popularity is interesting considering they're 'Dark Side of the Moon' wasn't really "radio-friendly".

Radiohead is pretty great too as well as the Icelandic band Sigur Ros.

If you don't know who Sigur Ros is, you should, they're awesome.

My favorite progressive rock song is "Time" by, yes, Pink Floyd.
