Right now I have a huge ferret cage for my three rats. There is bedding at the very bottom (what they are SUPPOSED to poo and pee on) They pee there. And everywhere else in the cage. It's horrible and miserable to clean. They've chewed holes in the bottom corners of the bottom (plastic) part. I need another kind of cage. I have no idea what kind. But it has to be chew resistant, under or around $150, and easily cleaned :) If anyone has any suggestions or advice, please tell me!

Many people, judging from the rat-only forums I'm on, swear by the Martin's cages. These cages are metal, rats can't chew them. If I lived in the USA I would have Martin's cages myself but they are too expensive to be shipped to me. I live in Canada.

I have a second-hand cage that looks like a Martin's cage, and I really like it. I have home-made cages and a variety of plastic-bottom cages, but they are chewed easily and retain an odor.

Petco or Petsmart may carry something good for you. If you separate the rats into their own cages, you don't have to clean the cages as often. If you think the rats may get lonely, you can ask them if it's possible to connect the cages with something like hamster tubes so they can visit each other!

The comment about Martin cages is true--lots of rat owners really do love them. HOWEVER, I had the same problem with them that you're talking about. I was never able to clean all the little nooks and crannies of the different levels of metal/mesh flooring. I completely understand!

As a result, I've tried several different cages with my rats, and my favorite is a good, spacious rabbit/guinea pig cage. They have deep plastic trays and sturdy coated wire bars. I like the Super Pet "My First Home" cages. They are one-level, which makes for MUCH easier clean up, and cost around $40 to $70. There aren't any wire floors to worry about, and my rats weren't able to chew it up. If you're concerned about the lack of floor space since there's no extra levels, just provide lots of cardboard boxes for them to climb on (free and replaceable!). Also, I tie scraps of fabric to make little hammocks... They're way cheaper than ones you can buy in the pet store, and it's no problem to replace if your rats chew them up.

Here's a few of them:

(There are bigger ones made for ferrets, too. I haven't tried them, but they look okay. They've got floors to worry about cleaning, but they're removable and made of plastic, so they shouldn't be too difficult to clean.)
Hope this helps!
