Well, I'm from Edinburgh but married a lovely lady from New York. I took her to Edinburgh and our first trip after checking in at the hotel was to the Old Town. Walking back to the hotel, she stopped at the top of the Mound and was overwhelmed by the view across the gardens to the Balmoral Hotel. Absolutely beautiful.

My first sight of New York (apart from the airport and the Belt Parkway) was coming out of the subway at Times Square. Bloody heck! That, my wife tells me, was what my first words were at that sight. Awesome.

Yes, both cities are amazing. They are also, as someone else said, two different sorts of city. I love them both, but for vastly different reasons. If money were no object (especially in NYC. lets face it) I would be very happy to live in either city.

If there is one thing that binds Edinburgh and New York, in my opinion, it is a sense of community greater than any other cities I know.

Strange comparison -- NYC has a population of around 8 milliion, Edinburgh less than half a million.

Few places in the world have as much concentrated history as Edinburgh in such a small space. Every step you take in the Old Town you're stepping on many layers of history and you need real experts to tell you even a fraction of it. Savour it with a knowledgable local.

Savouring NYC with a knowledgable local is also a good idea. Funny, but the thing that struck me was how narrow the strets in Manhattan are, and how many Alexanders-bodied double-decker buses from Falkirk (near Edinburgh) seemed to be hurtling around.

Which is better? Enjoy wherever you are and take it for what it is, not in terms of how it compares to other places.

And for what it's worth, my experience of Edinburgh is that it's the most violent place I've been -- and that includes a spell living in Detroit, within the city boundaries. It's the home, after all, of the utterly realistic "Rebus" crime novels, not to mention Burke and Hare.

I have worked in New York and visited Edinburgh several times. Although Edinburgh is interesting and relaxing it does not compare to New York. Apart from historical sites, Edinburgh has few things to do or see. NY has so many things to do and see that I returned there on vacation every year for about 10 years and still enjoyed the place . NY "never sleeps" - even if you don't know anything about art or theatre you will enjoy the inexpensive visits to galleries and live theatre--and the variety of food in NY is unbelieveable and relatively cheap.

Difficult question. I have lived in both. I absolutely love Edinburgh, but the weather is not ideal. Neither is the weather in NY.
Edinburgh has more culture. I have a flat near Ocean Terminal
New York is good.
Have to say a stalemate. Either would suffice.

Edinburgh (pronounce it Ed-in-bur-rah, not Edin-burg!) is an ancient city with a castle sitting on top of an extinct volcano. Underground passages, vaults and a rich history, cobble streets, the largest new years eve (Hogmany) party in Europe and a feeling of safety (in most areas) to tourists. Hand guns aren't common place and people rarely get shot.

New York is vibrant, never sleeping, but VERY crowded city. Lovely in it's own right, but in such a different way you can't really compare the two. Plus, in NYC people do have guns and use them.

After living in Edinburgh for five years, I have to say it is one of the prettiest cities I have ever seen. Though when I got back to the states and showed my Scottish husband (born and raised in Edinburgh) NYC, he was sort of in shock by it. Felt it a bit overwhelming and intimidating.

Just my humble opinion, but I would choose Auld Reekie over the Big Apple for reasons of the heart.

That's impossible.
They both have their merits.
I live in Kirkcaldy, and went to school in Edinburgh.
I love the architecture, the accent, the festival.
I've also been to New York, and it is a very vibrant city, but perhaps just a bit too large, and the crime rate is astronomical.
I suppose it's Edinburgh for me. Go to St Mary's in Palmerston Place on Christmas Eve for the 9 Lessons and Carols concert.

They are so different, I don't see how you can ask which one is better. It all depends upon what you are looking for. If you want, clubs, bars, 24 hour entertainment, then New York is the option. But if you want, a city steeped in history, amazing sights, tourist attractions, walks etc. then Edinburgh is definitely for you. I've been to them both, but I could never choose one over the other. They are both great places in their own right and each offer totally different things.

Considering that New York is going to be in the sights of every terrorist from the middle east for the next 200 years I am going with Edinburgh.

Hey, Dougie! You're spot on with your answer. NY is wild, crazy and never sleeps. There's something magical about Edinburgh, though - no other city I've visited has the same atmosphere. An, of course, its so close to the beautiful Kingdom of Fife!
