Here is a list of SUVs that fit you criteria:
2003 Chevrolet Blazer 2dr., 6 cylinders, 17 city/22 highway.
2003 Ford Escape, 4 cylinders, 19 city/25 highway.
2000 Honda CRV, 4 cylinders, 22 city/ 25 highway.
2003 Hyundai Santa Fe, 4 cylinders, 20 city/ 27 highway.
2002 Mazda Tribune, I4, 22/25.
2003 Nissan Xterra, I4, 19/24 (manual).
2003 Saturn VUE, I4, 23/28.
2001 Subaru Forester, H4, 22/27.
2004 Suzuki Vitara, V6, 19/22 (manual).
2000 Toyota 4 Runner, I4, 19/21.
2000 Toyota RAV4, I4, 24/29.
I hope you choose wisely but keep in mind that the prices and the mpg differ based on the engine size, whether the vehicle is 4x2 or 4x4, and the options in the car. Not all of these are great SUVs and so doing a test drive on each one of them can help you make a choice.
P.S. Toyota 4 Runner is a very good car however the V6 models are significantly better than the 4 cylinder ones but they are also more thirstier for fuel. There is definitely more power in the V6 models but they do cost more. I'd opt of the V6 just because I wouldn't want to struggle getting on the freeway, moving uphill or passing.

Your one stop needs to be to start looking at 1998-2000 Jeep Cherokee's.
They will get good gas mileage, are extremely reliable and are easy to repair at any mechanic. The 4.0L engine in the Jeep will outlast any other engine out there. check out www.naxja.com for lots of information about the Cherokee "xj", which is the code for the model. Parts are abundant for them. They come with different 4 wheel drive systems, as well as 2wd, and ones with leather and nice interiors as well as basic models. I would look for a 2000 Limited. It will have the nicest wheels, interior, and exterior look of any of them.
It is small enough that it still gets good gas mileage, but big enough where you can put 4 friends in it comfortably. (they seat 5). They are great in the snow and bad weather as well. You can probably find one around $7000 at most. Jeeps are are not SUV's, and SUV's are not Jeeps. Go with the original and the best. Jeep's are stronger built than "crossover's" and other wanna-be's. These include every single SUV listed by the poster above me.

DO NOT GET AN SUV FOR A FIRST CAR, they are all unsafe, they roll easly, expencive to repair, expencive to run, and if you get one with a small engine you spend on gas to run a heavy vehicle is going to be about the same as getting one with a big engine that burns gas. Get a small/midsized car. Cars are just as safe, if not safer. Most are cheap to run as well, but if you have your heart set on an SUV, get a generation 1 Ford Explorer (the boxey style) They last forever, and they are an over all good vehicle.

umm.. you basically ruled out any SUV... almost all SUVs have bad MPG. Only the newer ones address this and they would not be under 10,000. The prius is 27,000 and thats for a smaller gas friendly car. Most used SUVs you'd be able to get are gas guzzlers.

im a fifteen twelve months previous guy happening 16 no suv insurance is severe and merely no suv lol i dont recognize the thanks to describe why a motor vehicle is sturdy and sedan is next you may get a twelve months style less than 2006 so insurance will be decrease the older the motor vehicle the a lot less insurance now shall we inspect solid manufacturers. Honda, Nissan, & Toyota are the thanks to flow. Honda Civic (1996-2005), Nissan Sentra (2000-2006), Toyota Corolla (1995-2008) those are the three perfect first autos in my idea. now with the acception of the honda civic a coupe/2 door will be sturdy. yet my first motor vehicle is a 2000 Nissan Sentra SE. i love it ! goodluck

Not quite an suv, however the Subaru forester has lots of room, and the 4wheel dr. is great. Snow; Trails Go anywhere w/ friends, and it looks pretty cool to insyead of a big box. Have fun!

Why does a 16 year old need a oversized, wasteful SUV?
It's not safer for you (they flip like pancakes), and it's certainly not safer for everyone else on the road (blind spots galore, habit of riding on others' hoods).
Thank god you'll spend a fortune filling up your highway tank.
