I have well water too, that doesn't seem to be the issue when my towels smell funky. It only happens to me when I leave my towels in the washer overnight...or longer than I should. Fabric softener will keep your towels from being absorbent. I personally would not use it on towels.

Try to wash towels soon after you use them, if you wait days and days, the smell stays in them. Use liquid fabric softner along with a dryer sheet. If the smell is still there, use a little vinegar with your laundry soap.

Wash them and then is the rinse cycle, add some vinegar, and dry as usual.Make sure that the dryer is working and really getting the clothes completely dry.Mine wasn't working as well as I thought and now that I have a new one, all is well.I add a little vinegar to my towels all the time, especially my kitchen towels.

I use baking soda in the rinse cycle. My son gets grease on his pants at work and they smell terrible this gets the smell out with no problem

Try baking soda and if they are really funky put about 2 tablespoons of baking soda in them.

Don't overload. That's the biggest factor, expecially with towels.
