White wash is not durable and makes a horrible floor finish. To white wash any surface you mix up a batch of the white wash, then apply it with a paint brush, roller, or pad. Here are a couple of recipes: http://www.painterforum.com/milk.html
http://fiascofarm.com/recipes/whitewash.html

I would recomend that you choose some other means of decorating your floor, since you would need to white wash it about twice a week.

There are stains available at your local hardware stores. I tried it on some cabinets and it turned out great, I would just make sure you urethane the floors after you put the stain down so it won't wear from foot traffic. They have alot of different finishes now, high gloss, semi, satin etc..... I use a satin finish on my floors and it has held real well for the last 2 years (still looks new and I am hard on the floors with boots) Behr is what I used on the floors and cabinets........
