Vincent L is absolutely correct. I would only like to add that a metre is the basic system of length in Metric System.
It is 1000th part of the length of a kilometre and 100 times the length of a centimetre.
A metre is also approximately the distance from floor to hip on the average barefoot man.
A metre equals to 39.37 inches, 3.281 feet, 1.094 yard and 621.371×10−6 miles
