After Germany was beaten in WWI, the German society was very poor, and treated like crap... This allowed Hitler to gain better control over the German population by promising them a better economy if they did what he said. This gave him the power to do what he did before and during WWII.

If a society is down, it is much easier to get them to do what you want, by promising them things.

This is most likely the answer that your teacher is looking for, not that he was some small time soldier in WWI...

For further reasearch on this look up things like "Mind Control Hitler" and "How Hitler Got a Following"

Too bad people do not take the time to read your question. They must not, judging by some of the answers.
Adoph Hitler was a combatant for the Central Powers; more specifically Germany, during WW I . Hitler saw active service in the German Army in France and Belgium as a messenger for the regimental headquarters of the 16th Bavarian Reserve Regiment (also called Regiment List after its first commander), which exposed him to enemy fire. Unlike his fellow soldiers, Hitler reportedly never complained about the food or hard conditions, preferring to talk about art or history.
He was a much-decorated solder who saw combat and rose to the rank of corporal.
2 December 1914; Hitler received the Iron Cross, Second Class:
17 September 1917; Hitler received the Military Service Cross Third Class with Swords: 9 May 1918; Hitler received his third citation for a feat performed at Fontaine: the Regimental Decoration for "outstanding bravery in the face of the enemy." :
16 May 1918; Hitler receive wound badge in black: 4 Aug 1918; Hitler was awarded the Iron Cross, 1st Class.
Please do not think that I am trying to glorify that son-of-a-***** by stating his awards. Sometimes, history is distastful.

It was really what happened right after World War I that was the problem. Germany was defeated of course and was brutally humiliated by the Allies. Because of that German pride, that anger of humiliation was festering in Hitler. So when he got the chance, he rose up and came through the ranks with a lot of brutal maneuverings. This is it in a nut shell but if you're really interested, I'd suggest reading the classic book The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. Very interesting albeit thick book.

Many feel that the German people allowed a terrible person like Hitler to come to power because of WWI. After Germany lost WWI, they were treated very poorly.(as is common when you are the loser in a war). Hitler talked about German pride and destiny. This appealed to people who were still feeling bad about losing the war.
Unfortuneately, Germany is not the only place where something like this can happen. Anytime there is a national problem, people will choose a leader who talks a good story but may be a terrible person.

Hitler was a corporal in the German army and received the iron cross for bravery twice. He became disillusioned over the War effort and blamed the Jews (was influenced before the war in Austria when he was homeless and as a failure as an artist.) After the war was over, and the subsequent German humiliation and unjustifiable blame for theWWI (it was a bunch of treaties among all nations and the Austrian Archduke was killed by the Serbians who were allies with Russia who allied with England because their royal families were linked by Queen Victoria and the czarina Alexandria),Hitler joined the Nazi party and eventualy after a prison term and unsuccessful coups became chancellor of Germany.

Hitler was born in Austria in 1893, and joined the Bavarian army in 1914 after being deemed unfit for service by the Austrians in 1913. He did not become a German citizen until 1932.

Keeva, you may have checked everything, but you have got to learn to do better research. Do you ever use the Google search engine. Well, I simply typed Hitler, World War I in the search bar of Google and the first thing I came up with was a full chapter about Hitler's experience as a soldier in that war. It is very interesting and you should read it. Here is the link: http://www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/riseofhitler/warone.htm

Adolf Hilter was a Coproral in the German army. He was a causualty of chemical warfare, having been gassed in battle. He did not serve with any particular distinction in WWI.

More than one scholar has suggested that the reason Germany did not resort to chemical weapons in WWII was because of Hitler's personal experience with chemical weapons in WWI.

Hitler was an enlisted man in the Royal Bavarian Regiment during WWI. He was many times cited for bravery because he seemed to have no fear or care if he died.
