On the night of the Yule, a fire is lit and it has to be kept alight through the night, to mark the turning of the sun year and to help the sun gain it's strength again on the darkest night.
On the day of the solstice, the house is decorated with evergreen branches and ribbons and cakes are baked (like shortbread, which is round-shaped and cut in rays to simbolise the sun).

I celebrate Yule. On the night of the solstice is for religious ceremony, but the morning of the first day of winter is for gifts! Both days are times for good food and spending time with immediate family.
