I'll second "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe.

The best, shortest scary story I've ever heard is by Anonymous...

"The last man on earth sat in a room. There was a knock on the door."

Perfect, no? Hemingway wrote one as well...

"For Sale: Baby stroller. Never used."

If you're interested in the urban legend type of horror tale, I'd recommend any of the collections of Jan Harald Brunvand (you can probably Google him as well, find some stuff online). For real horror short stories, you must read 'The Lottery' by Shirley Jackson, 'I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream' or 'The Whimper of Whipped Dogs' by Harlan Ellison, 'The Midnight Meat Train' by Clive Barker, 'Heavy Set' or 'Small Assassin' or 'The Jar' by Ray Bradbury, 'The Tell-Tale Heart' by Edgar Allan Poe, 'The Picture in the House' by H.P. Lovecraft, 'Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper' by Robert Bloch, 'The Boogeyman' by Stephen King or any short tale by Poppy Z. Brite.

Read some of Edgar Allen Poe's short stories. Genuinely, creepy stuff: the cask of amontillado and the fall of the house of usher.

Edgar Allen Poe writes short stories that are considered sinister. I like him. Check him out. It's not "The girl found her younger sister with a knife through her head" kind of stuff, and it's really wordy, but very good.

Try reading "I am the doorway" in Stephen King's Nightshift collection. The whole book is really good. It is fairly old. One of his early works when he was at his best. Another one is "The Avatar of Nyarlethetop" by Clark Ashton Smith. What makes it so creepy is it almost makes you beleive it is a true story. Kind of hard to find this one.

The one when an old lady sits alone at night putting a jigsaw puzzle together without a reference picture. In time she begins to realize that the picture represents the room she is in together with her and the puzzle. Finally, she puts the last two pieces at the place where the window of the room is shown and she sees a horrible face of a lunatic with a knife. She lifts her head and looks straight into his bloody eyes.

(Nice one, eh?)

You may need a story that scares but also sets you thinking about gender issues, a handy scary tale that you need not spend time precious time and hard -earned $$ on (thanks to Page by Page on line books).

"Up and down and sideways they crawl, and those absurd, unblinking eyes are everywhere."

jeez!!what are these creepy phantasmagoria!

Get it all just now while still skimming through these responses.
It is right here:
