Portable car heaters work off the car's battery, and drain a lot of power out of it. Before spending money on one, and then finding that it flattens the battery so the car won't even start, see if you can revive the car's own heater. This uses hot water from the car's engine cooling system. If you can't hear the fan in the car's heater running when it should, find where the fusebox is, and check the relevant fuse. If the fan is whirring away, but there's no hot air, check your radiator water level - the heater element may have no water running through it. If a top up is needed, make it 75% water and 25% antifreeze, bearing in mind that we must be due for a cold spell soon.

Apologies if you have done all this already.

Not sure about buying a portable heater - but if I was you I'd get your car checked out. I presume you mean the normal in-car heater has packed up? It may mean you have no water in the radiator or an air-lock in the system (If so the engine may seize..). Or less worrying the thermostat may be stuck open - although with this, on anything over 5 miles you should still get heat.
