How is our morality and conciousness affected or maintained?

I'll just answer the morality part because it's easy and it's one of my favorite psych experiments.

Our actions determine what we believe instead of our morals directing our actions. It seems so counterintuitive. But here's the experiment example.

The subject has signed up for a survey. He shows up and the survey is long and incredibly insulting in every way. At the end of the survey the experimenter asks: "I know this was a really awful experience but it's really important that the next person in the lobby doesn't know in advance. For your time and for not telling, here's 50 cents. Thanks." The person hates it but goes outside and tells the next person the survey was fine. Then the person walks down the hall and runs into someone else who asks about the experiment. The subject says "it was fine."

Now try the same thing except that you give the subject $500 to keep quiet. He lies again to the first guy. But he tells the next one just how bad it was.

What's going on? The $500 guy knows without a doubt why he lied. The 50 cents guys is a little unsure why he lied. I mean, 50 cents? I don't think so.

To resolve this cognitive dissonance, some time between leaving the first guy and walking down the hall to the second guy, he decides it must really not have been so bad if he was willing to say so.

What you do as you begin the sexcapade may seem questionable to you morally. But you know you are not an immoral person. So seconds after being too forward or whatever, you believe you were in fact not naughty. This escalates and escalates until someone laughs at you or calls you a pig or whatever. Then you feel embarrassed.
