Janis Joplin has a raspy screechy bluesy soulful sound. She was around in the 60's. It's classic rock, but I definately wouldn't call it tame. She played with Big Brother and the Holding Company, and did some CD's with different backup bands. I like the album 'Pearl', and I think that's one of her more famous ones. I'm looking at her website and 'Best Hits' looks like it has a good selection.
Some of her songs that I like: "Piece of My Heart", "Summer Time", and "Me & Bobby Mcgee"- all of those three are on the "Greatest Hits" CD.
Anyways, good luck finding someone you like.
Sidenote: If you want harder rock, try Sass Jordan.

I personally like Broadcast, but they are more into the Experimental/Indietronica scene.
