Oh, is that all? Well, I would say you've answered your own question. At least in part. Be committed, but don't go out of your way to make sure she knows it. Expect to make sacrifices and compromises with no thought of reward, save for her smile. Have the courage and wisdom to reveal what is hidden from all others and the integrity to keep her hidden self hidden from all others. Let her know that you will be there to wipe away her tears, even if you cause them yourself. (There will be times...) Cherish the good times, and work 'til you drop to change the bad.
Ultimately, greatness is, as most abstract values are, in the eye of the beholder.
