The first step on doing a good science project is to pick some topic that interests you, and then find a way to experiment with it or show the science behind it. The interest part is important, because if you don't care, it'll be pretty obvious.

With a little imagination, you have thousands of possibilities.

Toys: With almost any toy, you can do tests on toy safety. Do you have old toys you've outgrown? See if they react with household chemicals, if they ignite or burn easily - and if doing so makes the toy even more unsafe. An example: the clothes on a doll not only may burn easily, but may also melt and stick to stuff (the safety part being that it could stick to your skin and burn you worse). Warning: Anything involving fire or chemicals requires parental supervision, and some protective clothing.

Household chemicals: You know how household chemicals often have a huge section of fine print about what not to do? Do some research to find out what happens - and from that research, see if you can find some way to safely experiment to show what happens and why those cautionary instructions are given. The warning above about supervision and protective clothing applies here as well.

Biology: There are LOTS of neat dual-use ideas out there about how to use household items for different things. Yesterday, I saw a woman on Rachael Ray's TV show who uses macadamea nuts to fill in scratches on a wood floor, or shoves a rusted item into an onion so that the onion's acid breaks down rust. Another onion idea is rubbing it on a window to keep it from fogging up. Finding a half-dozen tips like this with the same item (like an onion), then explaining why it works that way, is a fun project. If you can, find some other "tips" that actually don't work, to highlight the difference between good tips and bad tips.

Hope these help!
