I know there are now counterfeit money orders that scam ebayers, etc.
Can be cashier's checks also be counterfeit?
How would one know if it were real or not real?
Any tips on knowing the difference.
Certain bank names?
Thanks!

I'm aware of the scam of giving you MORE than what it's worth being a scam.... however, this is for a cashier's check for actual amount, but still nervous.

Any piece of paper can be counterfeited. Anything.
If your receive something purporting to be a "cashier's check" for an eBay purchase, call the issuing bank. Look up the number online; don't use the one printed on the check.
Explain that you have what appears to be a cashier's check of theirs and you want to confirm whether it's real. They'll ask you to read off the numbers on the bottom of the check, and verify accordingly.
Note: This is not foolproof. Someone could buy a legitimate $2000 cashier's check, forge 10 copies, and distribute them so quickly that even the bank confirmed legitimacy.
One BIG BIG BIG red flag for cashier's checks: Any scenario involving an amount higher than the sales amount, with instructions to send the difference back (or to a third party). This is a well-known Nigerian check scam.

Everything can be counterfeited these days, especially checks and cashiers checks.. There's not many ways you can verify is they're real.. Most if not all banks use that paper where it reveals a pattern or the banks logo when u put it against the light.. Pretty much like the presidents faces on the dollar bills.. But a more sure way is calling the bank and confirming that the check is legal. Some banks don't give information over the phone so you might have to visit them.

well done for asking this and not getting scammed. it is a genuine cashiers check most likely, but it's still a scam. it works like this: a check is sent out that isnt theres to send to you, so it's from someone else's account, you keep $500 and send the rest which in the end the money you are sending out is going to be your money that you will owe the bank later. you will fully clear the check but a few weeks or months down the line when the person who's money you cashed realizes that there account has been fraudulently deducted you will be liable to pay back $2850, the scammers will be off with the money that you sent to them and you will be left to pay all the money back and probably get in trouble with the police. dont cash it.

Happens all the time. Nigeria is making tons of money with those schemes (while claiming that they're doing something about the problem).
Any and every bank, plus banks that don't exist, can be counterfitted. Most of the time they take a $10.00 check and make it into a $1000 check, etc.
Never ever accept a check from an offshore bank, or use a third-party escrow service. If you take Paypal then you're usually okay.

Sounds like she is getting pulled into a form of nigerian scam. You have to pay them so much money for some type of cashiers check. Or your looking to get involved in it, in which you'll end up in a "Federal pound me in the *** prison".

Yes, and they are so good the banks even accept them, but then 4 weeks later they take them off your account.
The only option you have is to deposit it and to wait until the bank verifies that it was OK, before giving or doing what it was for.

yes, you should call the bank and ask about the check. They will be able to tell you if its valid or not.
