"Buy British". Does anyone still try to buy british made goods?

Or have people given up on the idea. And why is that?

This harks back to the days when Sheffield steel and British heavy industry was the pride of the empire.
'Made in Great Britain' was perceived as a mark of excellence throughout the world.
Sadly, we don't make anything today.
You and I are too expensive to employ.
We get the poor and desperate people of other nations to do all the hard, boring work so we can buy our cheap clothes in primark.

we do insurance.
we bet on commodities.


We still make and sell arms though!!!!.
Wanna buy a missile system?

I try to spend my pound with the small local guy's.
However can we justify spending money on a failing sector such as agriculture when:
we just don't need it anymore
no matter how much farms make, farm labourers still only get a pittance
people are starving in poor countries because of unfair GATT trade rules
other industries have gone to the wall
etc..

surely its consumers and employee's that need to be looked after. Thats where economic benefits are gained. Making big business fat cats fatter dosn't create jobs.
Making average joe richer, enabling him to purchase cheap goods, and producing goods that we're good at producing is the true way. Ask Milton Freidman. He'll tell ya.

Through tax i've already paid for my half groceries before i've left the house, and i have to pay again if i want (what should be) cheap foreign goods.
How can a farmer with £1/2 million of land complain he's hard done by???? But they do, and moan about people on 'benefits' LMAO
Buy British?? maybe if its a financial service.

I always have (although I was born in South America), and after a long wait I found the best British red wine ever!!! (which I have been looking for a long time!!).
British goods are great in quality, their production or upkeep don't involve children, it helps the economy of the Country, it is good for industries to grow and prosper etc..

If the lables are clear i will always buy British, i always have. When i'm in a rush i don't have the time to look so i just buy 'convienient'....Sometimes i feel i'm wasting my time because most other people just don't bother, i think siiiiiiiiiigh, what's the point, how can 1 person make a difference.

I live in Italy and I have a bias towards buying British goods. If it's not good enough for the Queen it's not good enough for me!
Got to have my Weetabix, Marmite, Branston pickle, Colmans mustard powder, Birds custard powder, Angel Delight, Ambrosia rice pudding.....List goes on. Depends how nostalgic I feel.

If you look at british built cars in general(what few we have) that should be enough to keep you from buying british!! if it's built in the uk it's expensive, will break down, and the general lifespan won't be long, buy German and jap in anything!!

I would love to buy things from the UK, especially hand knits,scarves,dolls,whatever. Yes I would consider the quality a lot higher than what we get now. I would love to get a catalog or website of any UK made items. BBC America always sends me emails to buy but their things are pretty high. I just bought a hat from Australia, so I would also love a hat or clothing from the UK. Our localwinters are about the same as yours.

Its not really practical to buy British because Britain no longer makes much of what it used to make.

Neil, thanks for asking this thought provoking question. Sadly, it just does not work out well, GB, as with the USA, once production giants of industry have outpriced, outsourced, and become nations of consumers while raising taxes on those who must buy food, clothing, automobiles, and pay huge tuitions at unis and certain other educational places.
It is like the rest of the world wants to reduce us to their levels of poverty.

When I visit the UK, I'm always taken aback at how outrageously expensive everything is (and I happen to know you do not on average make more money, you make less. Sorry.). If you're smart, you'll look to save money no matter where the good is made.
