Many in the South are socially conservative Democrats. In the past two Presidential elections, they tended to vote Republican.

It should interest everyone to note that Tennessee did not vote for Al Gore (a Tennessean), and also we should note that the DNC has apparently written off the South...

EDIT: The South is typically pro-gun, pro-God, and pro-USA...

"conservative" is a political philosophy.
"Democrat" is the name of a political party. There are many conservatives who are registered Democrats. Example: me. I am too lazy or too disinterested to go to the courthouse to change my registration. I vote for the conservative Democrat in the primary and the more conservative Republican in the general election.

if you look at either party you have people who run the gamut from conservative to liberal on either side, the parties are merely defined by their most vocal members. Look at the Republicans, for example: the Log Cabin Republicans is a group of gays who are members of the Republican party, and I have friends who are socially conservative who are Democrats, while I am a social/fiscal conservative Republican.

Too many people are loyal to their party without knowing all of the issues their party stands for. To answer your question, yes you can. I am a republican but I have voted for the democrat in local elections because he was a better candidate.

Sure. I'm a Republican who doesn't give a damn about gay marriage, doesn't discriminate against anyone, and am strongly in favor of much tougher environmental protections. So I suppose you could be a Democrat who is socially conservative. Why not?
