Need year make and model, auto or manual trans.
Your key is probably not coming out because the transmission is not sending the 'park' position to the ignition lock cylinder. Some car manufaturers call this a neutral safety switch, some call it other things but the deal is if your ignition lock is not registering park from the transmission then you are not going to remove the key. Dealer wants $400 for parts and labor??? Again it all depends on the car.

Its not cheap and its not easy, If the dealer wants $400 then take it, dealers are not rip off artists. parts and labor are expencive on many vehicles. If you want it done a little chaper got to a private full service garage.

"brake transmission solenoid"? What the helll is that?
Is that like a muffler bearing?

Put the key in the "run" position like it would be if you were driving the car.

Now, find the little push pin thing that holds the tumbler in the column and push it in.
While pushing it in, you should be able to pull the key mechanizm out of the steering column.

Try rocking the steering wheel to the left and right while turning the key. It may take some effort as it may be in a bind.
