I have a new 1G memory card that the computer wont read and the camera asks to format. Now, these are very important photos and I would do anything to get them back. If anyone knows how to save them I'll be grateful forever :)

Take the card to a photo shop that works with digital cameras - they should be able to help you, and be sure to ask about why your computer might not read the card. Good luck!!!

Ask a specialized place, like a Best buy or Circuit City. I'm sure they'll know what to do. If the pictures are still in there, you can get them off somehow.
