It's pretty hard to stand out in today's film industry because it seems like everyone who's got a camera is making movies. But there are some things that can make a movie successful...
I think the most important ingredient to this "recipe" of sorts is passion. The producers, the cast, the director, anyone and everyone involved in this needs to have a lot of passion and in the end it will shine through. Trust me.
Also, make sure that the topic you pick is something that people can relate to. I mean, look at Shakespeare. The only reason his plays are still popular today is because they deal with emotions and flaws that people will always have, i.e. greed, love, etc.
However, don't confuse this with being mainstream. Totally different concepts. Try to find a new, original light to cast upon society and life in general.
You may want to check out the Tribeca Film Festival and others to really get an idea.
I would say "Good Luck" but I' not too fond of that phrase and I know Holden from catcher in the rye would disapprove
