Did you explain what the belly button is a remenant of? And personally, I think as long as they can understand, kids can't be too young. Sex is how people exist, its only adults that make it so hush hush. Its a very important lesson, but not a "bad" one. There's too many unwanted pregnancies in the uk for sure. Well done for taking the responsibility. Have you thought of a DVD? I imagine kids these days believe film more than books. Try googling for a kids dvd on the subject

There's a book about called 'Mummy Laid an Egg' and it's great for kids. I'm sorry I don't recall the author. Try Google.
Okay, it's Babette Cole, check this review out:
Full review
Having taught for over 15 years, I decided that I wanted my two sons (now 14 and 16 and armed with the facts) to understand the basics of the facts of life, or at the very least, allow some of the giggly toilet humour to take its rightful place. In the toilet? Impossible, with 2 young boys.

So, armed with a certain amount of knowledge as to what I wanted, I talked to health professionals and teachers and found this book...Mummy Laid An Egg.
And what a book! Sold over a million copies and no surpprise there!!
From the start, it took away the embarrassment.

"Right", said mum and dad.
"We think it's time we told you how babies are made".
I can clearly remembered how they squirmed when I embarked on this "journey"
However, once I started reading, it became clear that there was nothing to blush about.
In the text, mum and dad are very embarrassed and tell the children that gilrls are made from sugar and spice and all things nice, some babies are brought by dinosauer, boys are mad from slugs and snails and puppy dog tails, some can be made of gingerbread and sometimes they are found under stones.
They can be squidged out of tubes or grown out of seeds in pots in the greenhouse. Dad admits that mum laid an egg on the sofa and "It...exploded. And you shot out".
The children find this highly amusing and decide to show their parents how children are made. They do a series of drawings which show the facts in a clever way. they show mum having eggs in her tummy and dad having seeds in pods outside his body. The technical bit, which is the only part I have seen some children squirm is where they draw a diagram to show how the "tube" from daddy fits into a "hole". The children then explain that the seeds swim inside using their tails.
The bit most children like best is the drawings of the ways mummy and daddy "fit together|"...on a spacehopper, a skjateboard, involved in circus tricks.
They then describe the Great Egg Race and how the winner (GOTCHA!) starts a very small baby which grows and grows until out pops the baby "Hello mummy"
The end of the book shows the children looking delighted with themselves and telling their parents "So now you know and so does everybody else"...this as they let in lots of animals.

PHEW!! Brief synopsis of the book

I have the hard back version which has stood the test ot time and lots of readings at home and school. It cost £7.99 in 1996 but I have looked on various sites and it can be bought 2nd hand from £1 (plus p and p)

I would use this for children from about 7. It doesn't have to be read to them, just left lying around or added to their book collection; children being children, they will start to look at the pictures even before they can read all of the words, and the questions will naturally follow. This is probably the best way to use this book...let things evolve naturally without pushing it as a talk about the facts of life. It's just another story book to look at and read together. I found that the questions changed as the boys got older, and it is now on the book shelf of my nearly 5 year old daughter although, not containing any obvious princesses on the cover, she has not bothered to look at it (yet!)
You can get in on ebay and Amazon and probably most bookshops. Good luck!

Just keep in mind if you don't teach your child about sex then someone else will or he might learn the hard way by catching a disease that won't go away. It's always best to answer all their questions as they ask them. He might not understand completely but, he will eventually. Just be as honest as possible, he needs to know the truth.

You have to go to the book store and find it for yourself! How do we know which book you will be happy with?
When my daughter was 4 or 5 I told her the man gives the woman sperm and this starts the baby growing. We had several pets, so she was somewhat familiar with genitals, but she didn't seem too curious about the exact process.

That's cute! LOL, I wonder what he thinks goes in the belly button? Maybe you should wait until he learns in his own time? When they teach him in school.

Wait a few years before you teach him, his brain is still far too simple to understand sex properly.

Let him stay innocent!

someone he knows and trusts obviously told him that.

I have always been honest with my children. ie when they were very young... I'm sure you can find a good book though. I remember I had one at one time, but I'm afraid its been years and I can't remember the title of it.

There are a lot of good ones at the public library. Ask the children's librarian. He or she will help you pick out one that suits you and your family and check it out.
