Assyria, now part of Northern Iraq. The first Assyrian Empire ruled Mesopotamia and the Middle East. The rise of Egypt to Imperial power came later.

Superpower is a term not used until the 20th century and probably shouldn't be used for powers before then, they just wouldn't have the resources of modernity. So the answer is the U.S. followed by the U.S.S.R. with the collapse of the Soviets the United States is the only superpower, though China is on the rise, it takes more than a huge population to qualify. France has never been considered and certainly wouldn't today.

I would like to agree with Tony B when he says that Assyria was the first, but instead I must agree with Polly.

Assyria was merely the first *Great Power*. And by the way, I am not advocating the US because of jingoism, but according to the evidence.

According to Zbigniew Brzezinski (former National Security Advisor) in his book "End Game", a super power has three qualifications:
1) Global military power
2) Dominating economic power
3) Unrivaled cultural power

Brzezinski goes on to point out that the Soviets only met the first criterion and thus was not a full super power.

Besides these three points, the possession of a nuclear stockpile sufficient to destroy the world several times over might be considered a fourth qualification.

Assyria's influence in these areas certainly did not extend to all parts of the globe. In contrast, the US's cultural power (blue jeans, rock and roll, fast food) has penetrated even such isolated countries as Mongolia; the US can project military power to every corner of the globe, and few countries would not worry if the US decided to impose economic sanctions.

The Romans also were a Great Power, but their influence certainly did not extend, for example, into the Western Hemisphere.

Other candidates would include the colonial powers. They were the first to have truly global military and economic power, but I don't believe any of them had the cultural influence wielded by the US today.

Super Power Country

I think alot of people think a superpower is judged just on its size but far more than its size a super power is judged by its influence on other cultures and civilizations. And as the foundations of Greek civilization came from Egypt and the Greeks would go on to influence Rome I would say Egypt was the worlds first and oldest superpower

The U.S is in many ways the worlds first superpower as no other country has had the wealth and power of the U.S The oldest world powers were born in Africa they where Kush and Egypt. At various times Kush ruled Egypt and the same vice versa. Egypt would eventully be colonized by the new world powers of Greece and later Rome Kush on the other hand stayed independent despite attempts by the Romans and others to colonized it. Kush continued to be a world power until it was conquered by Axum.

kind of an arbitrary question dont you think?

the "world's superpower" is clear today, and at other times in history but being the first is a crazy question

we could loosely define the "worlds first superpower" as the first person to dominate everyone else

therefore, the world's first superpower is also the worlds first person, and his reign lasted until someone bigger came along..... and that trend continues to this day!

but some notable superpowers are rome, egypt, china, usa..... and the list goes on

so in conclusion, sorry but i think your question is impossible to answer!!!!

Super Powers: 1) US, 2) USSR 3) Red China 4) France

Of all the superpowers of the past and present, the US is still the leading power....most of the time, the idiots in Washington squander the power into thin air! Fools.

The worlds second super power was in fact the mongols. In or around 1206, Genghis khan led them to unify all of Asia, Asia Minor and parts Europe .

The world first superpower was in fact the Muslim moors who first unified most of north Africa then rose up and marched into slavic southern Europe where they took what is known today as spain. They completely occupied the country and repopulated the entire country to what we now know as the colorful spaniards. This all happened around the early 5th century.
