I'm looking for a college, university or school that will give me a great experience. I don't want to go just for the sake of getting a degree, but for a unique experience. I want something more than the typical college education that you can get on your own by going to the library and studying. I'm into languages, anything artistic, writing, humanities, global studies, natural healing. . . lots of things. So if you have any ideas or suggestions, I'd really appreciate knowing about them! Thanks!

Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, is nearly unmatched in the extent to which they allow a student to design her own degree. Check out their page...

One of your other respondents mentions the web page (and book) for Colleges That Change Lives. Evergreen is one of the 40 schools featured there. I also recommend looking at that page and buying the book (which has much more than the web) because all of those 40 schools meet your requirements more than most schools.

Don't give up and settle for less than you want. Your school is out there.
Good Luck.

Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a school that is rather easy to get into but is difficult for many students to stay due to its no grade poilcy. People who have never attended Alverno before believe that it is easy because of this, but in actuality if you take your education seriously this makes it more challenging then the competition you find at the average college. At Alverno, instead of competing with others you get to know yourself better through self-assessments and regular instructor feedback. It is hard to describe the curriculum and easier to understand once you experience it first hand.

But as a previous responder noted, your college experience is what you make of it. Also, everybody is different and therefore I would recommend that you do your research before hand and choose the college that suits you best.

Probably the most unique college I can think of right offhand would be St. Johns, with campuses in both Maryland and New Mexico. The school doesn't not offer a degree program in anything, everyone takes the same courses, everyone starts at the same place (even transfer students). What St. Johns is, is a college that you learn, and learn how to learn. Here's a link....

Sarah Lawrence and New College of Florida, would be very unique choices with many opportunities, small prof/student ratios, and excellent academics.

Look into UC Santa Cruz. Does a pretty good job of straddling the line btw traditional and non-traditional.

The experience is what you make of it, not what's going to be there waiting for you. Every college/uni will be different for different people.
