we have vonage and they never told us that they would be taking money out of our checking account. In fact they told us that all that our debit card would be charged was for the shipping of their router so it would work. now they are taking money out of our account with out even telling us. can they do this?

Unless you signed something, they have no authority to do that. I would read over your terms and conditions and get a lawyer! Gold's Gym did that to me... I had 1 month free and I gave them my CC number so they would continue my application process and they ended up taking 3 months fees out and bounces like 4 checks! I wouldn't give anyone my CC number anymore. They, by law must take a money order if you do not feel comfortable giving out that information! I know that that is their way of securing themselves but if they do end up taking out more than they should it's going to take forever to get everything corrected!
I should have got a lawyer!

Ryan, you need to check you contract with vonage and see if there is anything in the contact that says they can debit your account. If not then you need to contact your bank and submit an affidavit for the funds to be reimbursed to you. I would recommend ordering a new check card as well and having the card that is have the charges closed. For more details about your questions call your bank or credit card provider.

4 words - not written - not said.

Check that long contract that you signed - and see what you DID sign up for. Chances are, you signed up for EFT (electronic funds distribution) without even realizing when you clicked a button - just contact VONAGE and ask them to cancel that, and get a cancellation number.
