I have been begging my parents since I was 15 to let me drive. I am 16 now. Younger than my entire junior class. I don't turn 17 until late fall 2007. They won't even let me get a learners permit. I have tried everything, at least that I can think of, to get them to let me to.
I'm in alot of clubs/study groups where I need to drive around. My parents are continually late to pick me up. The worse was when I had to wait 3 hours after basketball practice in the middle of winter for them to pick me up. And if I stay after for a club its usually 1 hour I have to stay sitting outside waiting for someone to pick me up.
I haven't given them a reason to not let me drive. I have basically straight A's except for 1 B. I do loads of volunteer work with clubs. I have never gotten into any serious trouble or any trouble. We live in a relatively safe suburb in Oregon. My parents say that I can maybe drive when I get into a college.(senior year) Any advice?

I've offered to pay for the driver's ed classes but still nothing. And everytime I even bring up the subject I end up getting yelled at and then they threaten to move the day that I can start driving (sometime during my senior year) later

Sit down with your parents and ask them to give a real answer as to why they will not let you drive. Let them know the reasons why you feel like you have shown responsiblity and ask them why they feel you are not responsible enough to drive. If you talk to them calmly maybe you guys can work out some kind of arrangment. Just let them know how you feel that they dont trust you and how it makes you feel to have them be late to pick you up. If all else fails try to see if an adult at school will help you talk to them to get the answers that you are looking for. My guess is that they are just worried about you , not that you will get into trouble, but that another driver will not be paying attention, etc. Keep your grades up and keep showing them how responsble you are.

i wish my senior was as responsible as you. GREAT JOB !
i would continue the great work that you are doing and have a sit down conversation and ask what you can do to contribute to your share of the car insurance. you should be able to get a discount for your grades.
don't give up, on your request it isn't unreasonable for a learners permit,
but have that talk with your parents, maybe you can come up with a plan where you drive every other day to your activities.

good luck and keep up the great work, I m passing this on to my
less than responsible teenage.

I M 17 had my permit since 15. why?? Dad doesn't want me to get a drivers license until I take a drivers ed. class. I am soo mad about that cause I was supposed to get drivers ed. this year at school but I ended up being in the 1 class I didn't want to be in (no it is not a gym class but that would be worse)

to make a long story short: ask your parents about a drivers ed. class.

It's something a lot of people go through. Need a job to get a car, need a car to get to work. When I was 16, I had no car. My parents are firm believers of u get what u work for. So if that means, take a BUS, take a bus. Give people gas money, then so be it....or ride a bike. It's life. Get used to things no longer being handed over to u.

try acting really responsible. and show them that u can drive. that is odd that ur parents arent letting u drive yet because u seem responsible. or just wait untill ur 18, but that probably isnt a very good option. tell them that u really need to learn how to drive and maybe let them help u with practicing. good luck!!!

GET A JOB. TO EARN $$$ TO BE ABLE TO BUY A 'USED' CAR, AND TO BE ABLE TO PAY YOUR OWN INSURANCE, AND YOUR OWN GAS/UP KEEP ON MAINTENANCE. THEN I THINK YOUR PARENTS WOULD THINK THAT YOU'D BE RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO DRIVE. IT'S NOT AN AGE TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE IT'S THE PRIVILEGE TO DO IT.
