Drummer jokes are unfair!! Have you ever tried moving your 4 limbs to a different beat and keep it going?

Ok apart from the physical differences between a drummer and a drum machine - as other poster have said, if you want on the nose timing then yeh use a drum machine but if you wanna jam, its much better with a live drummer. Also, you dont have to sit and program a real drummer to do 120 bpm or whatever, you just go with the flow.

But if you're in a band situation, you will have to split the money with a drummer too (obviously) whereas if you use a drum machine, you just pay that one off fee and thats it.

Hope this helps

A real drummer can do something that I have never seen a machine be able to do: slow down or speed up gradually, and respond instantly to "cues". A drum machine will deliver a rock-solid beat, but the cymbals from a drum machine do not sound like the real thing, especially if they are quality cymbals. There are advantages to a drum machine though - it will always show up on time, it will never get so drunk that it can not play, you don't ever have to argue with it about how much it gets paid, and it will never sleep with your wife or girlfriend! I use one though - its a great practice tool - more interesting than a metronome. I actually played for 3 hours without realizing it using the one I have. It is also good enough to be used live.

A drummer, unlike a drum machine, may have uses other than making drum noises. Some can get the drinks in or take a turn at the driving wheel of the band van, but mainly they can be feasibly blamed when someone else in the band f*cks up the timin'.

Drum Machines will keep going, but a real drummer can react to what's going on, 'cues', speed up or slow down, change the volume (quieten down or bash harder) where you'd have to program a drum machine in advance and it can't react if you need to change something. True, a real drummer can make a mistake, but they make music feel more 'alive' and not so 'manufactured'.

Drummers are just that - DRUMMERS

Drum Machines are f*cking sacrilegious!!!

Being a long time seasoned drummer I can hear instantly on a record if it is a live drummer or a crappy drum machine. Please DO NOT use drum machines on your music. If you do then your songs will sound lifeless and dependent on technology rather than on actual talent.

a drummer is human.
a drum machine is a machine...

I also think drummers produce better sound, but that's personal preference.

A drum machine can be customized and is used in Hip Hop/Rap
Drummers are human, although they can mess up, you can feel a bit more energy from them.

Ait dude, a drummer can play music on the spot without no electrical equipment, like a cadance, band or DCI group...But a drum pad also has the ability to have you make any beat you want and convert to your musical software program in your PC.... Then add some synth, extra stuff, acapella, and then you have a SONG!!!!

Give them both 2 six-packs of beer.

The drummer will still be going after soaking up 2 six-packs of cold beer.

But the drum machine will (thank god) finally be silenced.

a big difference though a drum machine is consistent you can not beat a live drummer who is good for spontaneity, sometimes quirkiness and sometimes just pure inspiraton and motivation. And they are great to watch on stage
