because it's MANLY! You're dealing with a character who lost his manhood in the war, and he needs to show his manhood as best as he can.

Also Hemingway was really into manly stuff like that.

Well, we know that Jake has a sexual problem. Maybe his obsession with agressive/violent sport is a way to compensate for his physical impotence.
Hemingway was combative, some say homophobic in his interactions- maybe the two men (Hemingway and Jake) have some deep-down issues with sexuality.
