Well, we know that Jake has a sexual problem. Maybe his obsession with agressive/violent sport is a way to compensate for his physical impotence.
Hemingway was combative, some say homophobic in his interactions- maybe the two men (Hemingway and Jake) have some deep-down issues with sexuality.
