The best way to get rid of the smoke smell or just plain old musty book smell is to bury them in a box of cat litter for a few days. The cat litter will extract the smell. This is a tried & true method that is recommended by many book sellers. Use plain old regular cat litter not that expensive clumping or perfumed stuff.

Air them out first, then place them in a sealed bag with some baking soda, a few days and the smell should be removed. Repeat as necessary.

Anti-Tobacco incense is useful as a pose to wet liquids like essential oils or fabreeze as its dry and the Anti-Tobacco fumes can absorb into the paper without discolouration and it is easy to buy from more incense or fragrance stores.
