it means that you are no longer married, but it is NOT the same as a divorce. a divorce is where the government says you are no longer married, and a annulment is where the Catholic Church says you are no longer married (an annulment is approved by the Vatican and is investigated thoroughly before it is decided)

An annulled marriage is a marriage that never happened in the first place. A divorce is a marriage that has been legally ended in a court of law. Hope this helps. Merry Christmas

Annulment is a legal procedure for declaring a marriage null and void. Annulment differs from divorce where the court ends an otherwise legal marriage on a specific date.
Simply speaking it is declaration by the court, that there was no valid marriage.

As I understand it, an annulment is a condition of catholic church law. It's the dissolution of a marriage and having it be seen as though it never happened in the first place.

From a strictly legal standpoint ...

Divorce is a dissolution of marriage ... the marriage existed and is now ended.

Annulment is cancellation of marriage ... essentially, saying it never existed. Usually only granted when the marriage has not been consumated (no sex) or if one of the parties is underage and did not obtain parental consent.
