I find out what people do for a living and try to make *nice* small talk about it.
I start talking about their jobs and ask questions about topics in their job "lingo." Some people get uptight and tell me things like your not a ______ so you wouldn't understand if I told you about it.
Which in fact I just might know a little about the subject to keep the convo a float. Then they get very condescending and uptight at times and start talking down to me. Any idea's to why this happens? Maybe it is because certain people are insecure?!?!?

I am just trying to be nice and make new friends by talking about subjects that we may have in common.

Of course. If you as a non-professional can hang in there through a conversation with them, pros, then they're no longer "speeecial."
