Could be, it could also be Braxton hicks which mimic contractions. The way to tell the difference is if the pains come regularly, like lasting 1 minute 6 minutes apart. Braxton hicks do not have a set pattern.

yes, you are in the early stages of labour. How long it will take to speed up is the big unknown!! Why don't you call your midwife? she may want to check if you are dilating or listen to the babys heart rate.
