Yes I know this, please read the question. Let me rephrase the question:

"Why? What do they do differently at the factory and Why can't I do it and/or How do I do what they do?"

I had this problem too. I went to Walmart and found an $80 DVD player that indicated it played DVD-R's. It has worked fine. I don't know why but it works.

Make sure that you always finalize your recordings.
Use DVD-R discs and record in DVD-R format.

AS STATED ABOVE A DVD HAS TO BE FINALIZED ON THE MACHINE IT WAS BURNT ON BEFORE IT WILL PLAY ON ANOTHER MACHINE.
A PRE-RECORDED DVD ISN'T MADE THE SAME WAY AS HOME DVD. THE PITS (WHAT THE LASER READS AND CONVERTS TO VIDEO AND SOUND) ARE STAMPED ONTO THE ALUMINUM SURFACE SANDWICHED BETWEEN THE PLASTIC LAYERS. A HOME DVD BURNS THE PITS ONTO A LAYER THAT HAS DYES OR OTHER CHEMICALS IN BETWEEN THE PLASTIC LAYERS.
