the fixture is about 3 years old, the wiring in the house is about 50 yrs. old or older. It sounds like pop corn.

A fire hazard. It is not a short circuit (as a previous responder has alleged), but a weak connection among the wires in the ceiling box. Turn off the breaker that feeds the box, and remove each wirenut individually and inspect the wires inside. You will see blackening on wires in the bad joint. Restore all connections, using new wire nuts of appropriate size. Once the bad connection is found and fixed, you are done.

pull fixture down look for blacken wires sound like it`s arking

that is definitley a short and i would have it fixed.
