You know a midwife will feel for how high your uterus is? What is she feeling for? If I was to try and do this myself, could I? And how?

You could, but speaking from personal experience it can be difficult as the movement of your arms in reaching round your own abdomen tends to tense up your abdominal muscles making it harder to feel.

What your midwife is feeling for is the fundus (top of the uterus). If she starts feeling from above where she thinks it wil be and works her way down feeling with her hand (this is called palpation) she gets to a point where she feels the fundus as firm. The fundus can usually be felt after 12 weeks of pregnancy, as before this it is within the woman's pelvis. It then gets higher and higher until around 36 weeks when gets right up to the woman's breastbone - it may drop a bit after this when the baby's head engages in the pelvis and the whole bump drops a bit.

the doctor or midwife is feeling for the top of the uterus. It takes a lot of practice and knowledge to know what you're feeling for. I don't think you'd be able to do it yourself. They're just using it for a rough measurement of size

It's called the fundus, and you can feel for it yourself. Start at your belly button and press in and downward, repeat lower and lower until you feel something against your hand. That's the fundus. It will feel squishy, like a water balloon. Don't worry about hurting the baby in this process; if you apply gentle pressure while you're feeling for it you're doing okay. You might get a kick or two out of it though!

yes you could try nothing the matter with having a feel around but I'm sure you would need a lot of experience to know what you are feeling for as for all the negative answers you have received they are all numpties they actually think you mean in the inside not over your belly duh

Nope, you can't unless you have really long arms. You might want to ring that "World's tallest man"....He helped the dolphins, you know.
