The Stone Age or Paleolithic covers an immense time span, and during this period major climatic and other changes occurred, which affected the evolution of humans. This is the age before the domestication of animals, or development of crops, so we were hunter-gathers.

We had to basically follow our food, which for some stone-age cultures was a seasonal migration. Also the period between the end of the last ice age, 10,000 years ago to around 6,000 years ago, is characterised by rising sea levels and a need to adapt to a changing environment and find new food sources.

It is not until things started to settle down a bit, that agriculture started to be developed around mesopotamia, and we as a race put down some roots.

I guess I'd have to ask what caused you to ask the Q?

First of all "Great" is relative and subjective, especially as it regards people traveling on foot, with not only limited means, but limited experience as well.

Certainly "Nomadic" became necessary, but initially I suspect Prehistoric Man traveled not much farther than being in sight of his cave, and possibly anything to hunt and gather.

Beyond that; To say that the World was a much smaller place in Prehistoric times, is pretty accurate, and besides there was no, or very little basis of comparison. IE: "Hey OG, what say we bail out for a long weekend to hit "Club Med?"
