For some reason my taskbar icons disappeared after my computer was idle for a while. I think it was after my comp. did an automatic update and restarted itself. I am unable to add new icons and all of my previous icons are gone. I pretty much know my around the computer but I haven't been able to figure this one out.

Thanks!

I'm talking about on the taskbar next to the start button on the bottom of the screen.

To ensure your Quicklaunch is enabled, right-click on the taskbar.
Select Properties.
Select TaskBar tab.
Put a tick in the box "Show Quick Launch".

If you still have no icons showing, then your Quicklaunch folder must have been corrupted or emptied?

You can find it here:
C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

and then drop your shortcuts back in.

If the folder "Quick Launch" does not exist here, you will need to create it (or a reboot should put it back - from the Registry entry).

You can by opening Quick Launch as a window. Make a shortcut to:- "C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch" and put it on your desktop and you will have the Quick Launch folder with whatever size icons you choose. Edit Alex B gave an answer I didn't know about but my way is an alternative in case you don't want to make the task bar too big in order to fit all the icons in at one view.

Are you talking about in the regular task bar or the notifications area? Some programs you can go into the folders and find the file and it has an add to task bar option. Also check in your start up and see if they have been unchecked. Start menu, run, type in msconfig and look at your start up tab.
