On a Ford it stands for "Rallye Sport" - don't ask me why, but it used the French rather than the English spelling ("Rallye", not "Rally"), and I believe it was first used on special versions of the Mk1 Escort in the late 60s or very early 70s, built for rally homologation.

On any other make of car, it stands for whatever they want it to, or maybe nothing at all.
Quite often the version or trim-level names don't really stand for anything, they're just letters made up to be slightly different on the different versions, or copied from another manufacturer.

couldn't it also be the Lancer Rally Edition. They might call it the CZ or something. But it does stand for Rally Sport.

It's a Ford only badge - they stick on all all of their 'sporty' models. The used to use XR (XR3 was the Fiesta, XR4 was the Escort). I think it stands for Rallye Sport.
