Step 1: Set the statements up as 2 algebra equations, where g is the # of girls, and b is the # of boys:

1.) There are 1176 students at Wilmington High School.
g + b = 1176

2.) There are 50 more girls than boys.
g = b + 50

Step 2: Substitute equation 2 in 1.
g + b = 1176
(b + 50) + b = 1176
2b + 50 = 1176
2b = 1176 - 50 = 1126
b = 563 (solution!)

To find # of girls, substitute the answer for b into equation 2.
g = b + 50
g = 613

Check:
g + b = 1176
613 + 563 = 1176
1176 = 1176 (check!)
