How would you show the equation for this:

A theater charges $4 per person before 6:00 p.m. and $7 per person after 6:00 p.m. The total ticket sales for Saturday was $11,228. What are the possible numbers of people that attended that theater before and after 6:00 p.m.?

This is a diophantine equation, a linear one in fact.
We have 4b+7a=11228, So b=(11228-7a)/4 = 2807-a-3a/4. So a is a multiple of 4, let a=4t, then b=2807-7t. Now simply sub in positive integer values for t, making sure b >=0, in other words, t<=401. There are therefore 402 possible pairs that satisfy your question.

Let x = number of people who attended before 6:00 pm
Let y = number of people who attended after 6:00 pm

4x + 7y = $11,228
