I have a cordless key and mouse for my other pc. the mouse works fine and all the extra features of the keyboard work but the basic keys dont. it is not a USB conection. it plugs into the normal keyboard socket. I have gone into device manger and its there but the keys dont work. Any ideas?

Try changing your batteries.

If that doesn't work, ditch your wireless keyboard and get something wired. I find wireless keyboards disproportionately troublesome.

BTW, are you running a wireless network? They interfere with wireless keyboards and vice versa.

Ask the computer if it's checked under the bed you may find the key board there if not try in the kitchen down stairs keep look and it'll turn up I know because my mum tells me to check these places and i always find what I'm looking for.

Have you installed all of the software that came with the software? You may need to install proprietary software to use it. Try visiting the keyboard maker's website too.
