No-one disputes that the second period of one thousand years Anno Domini in the conventional Christian calendar came to an end at midnight of 31st December 2000. That is when all the fireworks, parties and other celebrations should have taken place. However, because the year 2000 was considered to be a landmark year, most governments agreed to celebrate the start of that year. That did not negate the fact that the year 2000 was still 20th century.

The confusion in people's minds arises from the differences in the way we count calendar years and the counting of our own age in years. Thus calendar year one begins at the outset of that year, and comes to an end on completion of that first year. Consequently calendar year two begins when there have only been twelve months. On the other hand, a child has no age in years during his/her first twelve months, and only acquires the age of one upon completion of the first year, retaining that age until completion of the second year of his/her life.
